Small Holders Show (Finished)

Small Holders is an annual event for the 'small holders' (duh!) and includes rural crafts and tradesmen, lots and lots of animals and a food market. There were shows scheduled in the 'main arena' - such as falconry, a dog show and vintage farming machines, lovingly restored to operation. We have been invited by the Grey Goose Wing Archery to go hand-in-hand with the Wessex Invaders and Settlers Empire in the main arena as well as showcase our weapons and add a bit of colour to the Living History camp area - which already comprised a trader, herbalists, cooking and a large archery range, where anyone with two quid to rub together could 'have-a-go' and shoot the foam 'pig'. The camp has attracted many onlookers and visitors - some of which spent a lot of time with us, asking questions, discussing finer points of medieval combat and posing for photos with swords and helmets. There was, as usual, a games table, where one could play medieval dice games and a variations of the venerable nine-men-morris. We have had 45-minute slots both on Saturday and Sunday, in the main arena, to stage a combat tournament. Some warriors went in light, while others were fully armoured. The Sunday tourney has been won by the young Charles, who, using his devious tactics of being much smaller than the others, managed to outsmart his two opponents. Here are some photos to capture the spirit of the show...
